Kilgar

He knew it was time to move on when the narrow miss by the slim sword left him thinking I wonder if that counts as my morning shave.
The next attack was a thrust which he rolled away from, careful not to touch any part of the blade as it tore a perfectly straight gash through his cloak and put a perfect hole in the wall behind him. The thrust became a horizontal slash toward him but he had finally gained the time he needed and was already sliding up under the slash with the knife. A quick thrust between the chest plates and he was away again.
The assassin seemed to pause gently, as if in thought, before sagging and then crumpling to the ground. Kilgar went to the sink, carefully washed the knife, and placed it back on the counter where he found it.
"Sorry about that," he said to the chef, tipping his cap, and walking back into the main dining room.
Once back in the dining room he headed over to the crowd of people. Another assassin was sprawled on his back over the buffet table.
"Any still breathing?"
"None, they were that good at least, still, they seem amateurish for this crowd" Captain Oril replied.
"Huh, doesn't seem likely they would have thought to catch us off guard drinking and feasting. This wasn't the celebratory dinner, only the formal meeting with the prince, and even if it were, they attacked when we entered, not after we had been drinking or even eating. Maybe... check them for explosives" Commander Genviere said.
Kilgar walked back to the one bent backwards over the buffet. He check the man's pockets, seams, eyes, shoes, even unbuttoned his shirt and did a quick scan of the mans torso with his glasses. While scanning him the mans watch sent up a red flag.
"Commander Genviere, were there any satellites left in place when your fleet arrived?" Kilgar asked without turning around.
"none" Genviere replied without inflection.
"What about derelict bases or platforms in the system?"
"There was a base on one of the moons of the fourth planet, but neither the planet nor the moon read lifesigns and all heat signatures indicated the base has been dead for over 50 years."
Kilgar slowly turned to face the Commander "Commander, were there any weapons on that moon?"
"Not a weapon, but a coring laser that might be used as a weapon, but it was oriented to the surface of the fourth planet, plus the base was dead. Are you implying it might be a weapon of the Affaphades?"
"This watch, looks like a timer with a biosign tracker. There aren't any explosives on them, and the building is secure, even if the ground security were corrupt, my men checked out the building before we got here, and I trust them with everyone's life. Last time I saw this it was an orbital platform. The beam took out the whole building and the sub floors, left a crater 160 meters across and about 500 meters deep."
"If that planetary coring system is really aiming at us the whole planet might crack, we need to leave NOW!" Captain Oril said, tones of urgency, not panic, creeping into his voice.
"They won't risk cracking the planet open" Kilgar said as he gathered his attache and headed to the elevators. "However, you are right, we need to leave now, I advise everyone to get to the shuttles now"

As the group of officers reached the elevator a slight whine started and some of the objects in the hallway took on an odd luminescence.
Kilgar stopped where he stood, "We're too late, we'll never get out of the blast radius in time."
